Second-Year Students (Sophomores)

Second-year students (this does not include Transfer students) are recommended, but not required, to meet with a major advisor once during this year. Students will be receiving holds in Winter Quarter. The goals and objectives of mandatory advising for second year students are to engage with co-curricular activities, learn about transferable skills, and consider next steps towards your professional goals.

We encourage you to take some time to learn about opportunities available to you, such as research, internships, independent study, and studying abroad. Check out this brief resource video as well as the following resources:

  • Visit the Internship & Career Center and attend an advising meeting, sign up for their workshops, or visit their Career Fairs
  • We encourage you to develop a resume that you will continue to build upon on in the next two years.
  • Get started on finding areas of research that interest you by using the Undergraduate Research Center, and connecting with your department faculty.
  • Explore study abroad opportunities, such as Quarter/Summer Abroad, Internships Abroad, or UCEAP
  • Take classes in fields of interest outside your major. You can find a comprehensive list of minors available at UC Davis here.
  • Understand the resources available to you as an undergraduate student, including academic resources, financial, housing, and employment resources, and student health resources.

We also encourage you to think about and set goals for achievement during your time at UC Davis.

  • What are your goals for your next year?
  • What would you like to explore that you haven’t been able to do yet?
  • Do you have an updated resume?

No action is needed to remove your hold. Your hold will be automatically removed by a specific date. You are encouraged to submit an academic plan via OASIS to your major advisor and come for drop-in advising.
